How it works in Germany

In Germany, report the loss to the local Ordnungsamt or Fundbüro — a found pet is legally lost property (§965 BGB, claimable for about 6 months) and is usually handed to a Tierheim or municipal shelter. Also flag the pet as missing on TASSO, Findefix or petito — the main pet registries — and call your nearest Tierheim.
